Claude pricing explained: the real 2026 cost

Claude can cost a small business anywhere from $0 to thousands each month, depending on whether people use the chat app or software sends automated requests. Most solo operators belong on Free or the $20 Pro plan. Teams should pay for Team only when shared control matters. Max mainly pays for capacity.

Claude prices at a glance

Anthropic sells two different things under the Claude name. The Claude app is the website and desktop assistant your staff opens. The Claude API is a connection that lets other software send work to Claude automatically. They have separate bills.

Those prices come from Anthropic’s current plan table. Annual Pro is charged as one $200 payment. Team requires at least two members and supports up to 150, according to Anthropic’s Team documentation.

The table also exposes the trap. A $20 Team seat sounds equal to Pro until the annual commitment and two-person minimum enter the calculation. Meanwhile, Enterprise has a low-looking seat price followed by a variable usage bill.

What Free actually covers

Free includes web search, memory, file creation, and connections to services such as Slack and Google Workspace. That is enough to test real business work: summarize a supplier document, turn meeting notes into an action list, or draft replies from approved facts.

Its main constraint is capacity. Anthropic does not promise a fixed number of messages. Limits change with conversation length, file size, model choice, and demand. Free also leaves out Projects, which organize related chats and source files, and Research, which gathers information across multiple sources.

Pro is the practical solo plan

Pro costs $20 month to month or $200 paid yearly. The annual price works out to about $16.67 a month and saves $40 across a full year. It adds more capacity, unlimited Projects, Research, extra model choices, and access to Claude Code, Cowork, Design, Science, and Claude for Microsoft 365.

The key word is “more.” Anthropic says Pro supplies at least five times the usage of Free during each rolling five-hour session. Paid plans also carry weekly limits. One long conversation with large files can consume more of the allowance than several short questions, so a message count would be misleading.

Pro suits an owner or manager who uses Claude most days and wants separate Projects for recurring jobs. One Project might hold approved company facts and sample writing. Keep confidential records out until your company has reviewed the account settings and terms. Individual plans show model training as opt-out, meaning you must change the setting if you do not want eligible content used for that purpose.

Max buys room, not company controls

Max comes in two capacities. The $100 version provides five times Pro’s usage per five-hour session. The $200 version provides 20 times Pro’s usage. Both add higher output limits, priority during busy periods, and earlier access to some features.

That pricing is steep for routine marketing drafts. A person paying $100 instead of $20 is spending an extra $960 a year. The $200 level adds $2,160 a year over monthly Pro. The work needs to be frequent and valuable enough to make those differences ordinary operating costs.

Max still behaves like an individual plan. It lacks central billing, single sign-on, shared administration, and company-wide usage reporting. Single sign-on means staff enter through the company’s controlled login system. Separate Max accounts leave the management problem untouched.

The sensible trigger is visible limit pressure. Check Settings > Usage before paying more. If one heavy user loses hours to resets each week, Max 5x deserves a one-month measurement. Max 20x belongs to exceptional workloads, especially when one person uses Claude across chat and coding throughout the day.

Team pays for control and shared work

Team Standard costs $25 per person on monthly billing or $20 per person with annual billing. The minimum two seats make the entry bill $50 monthly, or $480 upfront for a year. Premium seats cost $125 monthly or $100 on annual billing and provide five times the usage of Standard seats.

Anthropic lets a company mix Standard and Premium seats. That matters. A five-person business with one heavy user could pay annually for four Standard seats and one Premium seat, totaling $2,160 a year. Giving all five Premium seats would cost $6,000. Match capacity to the people who consume it.

Team earns its higher minimum through administration. It includes central billing, usage information, single sign-on, organization-wide instructions, company search, and controls over connections to outside services. Anthropic also says Team content receives no model training by default. For a business moving approved material into AI, those controls can matter more than extra messages.

Team remains unnecessary when one person owns every task and no sensitive company information is involved. Before adding it to your software budget, run the same ownership check in our marketing stack audit. Enterprise starts cheap and becomes variable

Enterprise is listed at $20 per seat each month, billed annually, plus usage at API rates. “Usage” means the amount of text Claude reads and writes. The plan adds audit logs, role-based permissions, custom data retention, network restrictions, and spending limits at the person and company level.

The seat charge is only the cover fee. A ten-person company begins at $2,400 a year before Claude processes any work. Actual cost then depends on the chosen model, the size of every request, and the length of each answer.

Enterprise is relevant when compliance or detailed access control is a buying requirement. A small team seeking shared billing will usually find Team easier to forecast. Any Enterprise budget should separate the fixed seat line from a monthly usage ceiling, then assign alerts well below that ceiling.

The API is a separate meter

The API charges by tokens, small pieces of text that AI models read and produce. One million tokens is roughly hundreds of thousands of English words, though the exact count changes with the material. Your Pro, Max, or Team subscription does not prepay that automated use.

Anthropic’s API pricing page lists Claude Haiku 4.5 at $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. Sonnet 5 costs $2 in and $10 out. Opus 5 costs $5 in and $25 out. Input is what your software sends; output is Claude’s reply.

Consider an automated job that processes 10 million input tokens and creates 2 million output tokens in a month. At current Sonnet 5 rates, that is $20 for input plus $20 for output, or $40 before any extra features. The same volume on Opus 5 is $50 in and $50 out, totaling $100.

Costs climb when software repeatedly sends long instructions or full documents. Anthropic offers prompt caching, which stores reusable input for cheaper rereading, and batch processing, which runs non-urgent jobs later at a 50% discount. Those are technical settings, so ask whoever maintains the connection to show them on the invoice rather than assuming they are active.

Which Claude plan fits your business

Choose by constraint, not feature count.

• Stay on Free when Claude is an occasional helper and limits rarely interrupt work.
• Budget for Pro when one person uses Projects or Research regularly and needs more capacity.
• Test Max for one month when a heavy user can document repeated Pro stoppages.
• Use Team when at least two people need shared administration, company search, or safer default treatment of business content.
• Price Enterprise as a fixed seat fee plus metered use when audit records, custom retention, or detailed permissions are mandatory.
• Treat the API as its own supplier bill whenever Claude sits inside another app or automated process.
