In this briefing

Google is giving publishers and business sites a direct way to earn more visibility across Search and its AI answers. That makes reader loyalty measurable in a new place. Gemini also appears to favor business websites for local recommendations, while ChatGPT can now send Apple Messages and YouTube is packaging creator videos more like television.

Google released an embeddable Preferred Sources button on August 20. When a reader presses it on a website, Google can show more from that site in Top Stories, AI Overviews, and AI Mode. AI Overviews are the generated summaries that sit above some search results. Google says users have already chosen more than 600,000 unique sources.

The same Google announcement says people will soon be able to tell Discover, the suggested-content feed in Google's app, what they want to see more or less of. The feed will adjust immediately and remember the request. The feature is due in the coming days.

For a business that publishes advice, research, or local guides, a returning reader can now affect future reach inside Google's ordinary and AI-led results. That is useful as AI summaries reduce visits to some websites. The button will matter little to a thin company blog with no reason to return.

Your move

Add Google's Preferred Sources button beside the follow or newsletter controls on your most-read pages. Then give existing readers one plain reason to use it: they will see more of your future work in Google Search and its AI answers.

Gemini keeps coming back to business websites

Business websites supplied 60% of the citations in a new study of 14,472 sources used by Gemini for local searches. Steady Demand ran 1,487 questions across 50 US metro areas and 10 service categories, using searches similar to “best plumber near me.” A citation is the webpage an AI answer names as support.

The underlying study also found a serious measurement problem. When researchers repeated the same question, Gemini used overlapping sources only about 40% of the time and recommended the same top business roughly 7% of the time. Google's standard map results returned the same top listing about 90% of the time in the control test.

So your own service pages still deserve attention, but a single Gemini check proves very little. Run the same buyer question several times, across Gemini and ChatGPT, before changing a page. Our explainer on how AI chooses businesses covers the site details and outside signals these systems can read.

ChatGPT can send Apple Messages

OpenAI added an Apple Messages plugin for ChatGPT's Mac desktop app on August 20. In Codex and ChatGPT Work, it can read, search, summarize, draft, and send iMessage, SMS, and RCS conversations. SMS and RCS are the standard text-message formats used outside Apple's iMessage system.

The official instructions say the plugin runs on the Mac and requires Apple Silicon, the newer processor used in current Macs. It asks for approval before each send by default. A user can allow future sends to one conversation without another check, but OpenAI warns that this removes the final review.

The time saving is real for an owner who lives in Messages, but the business risk sits in the send button. Keep approval on for customer, staff, and supplier conversations. Use the tool to find context and prepare a reply, then check the recipient, promise, date, and price yourself. Our small-business AI policy template can help make that approval rule explicit.

YouTube turns playlists into TV shows

YouTube says more than 3 million creators can now turn eligible playlists into shows for its television app. A creator in the YouTube Partner Program, the system that gives approved channels publishing and earning features, can organize related videos into seasons with a dedicated show page. New Show and Podcast tabs help viewers continue to another episode.

The YouTube update also adds previous and next buttons across videos. For a business channel, this changes the value of a connected series. A set of repair lessons, product demonstrations, or customer education videos can now feel like one program on the biggest screen in the house.

Businesses with five or more related videos should group them around one customer problem, use a consistent naming pattern, and check whether the channel is eligible to mark the playlist as a show. Everyone else can ignore the format until there is a genuine series to package.

Worth watching

  • Google News on Android now lets listeners choose topics for its AI-made daily audio briefing, with source links kept alongside the summary.
  • YouTube says viewers watch more than 2 billion hours of Shorts on televisions each month, and it has added a direct Shorts entry in the TV app.
  • ChatGPT's Messages access is limited to the Mac desktop app for now, so mobile and web users do not get the same send controls.
