In this briefing
AI shopping is starting to send meaningful buyers to smaller online stores. Shopify says traffic and orders from AI assistants tripled in a year, with niche products gaining most. Klaviyo is also buying an AI customer-service team, while Cloudflare has opened a system for letting workplace AI handle company data with tighter controls.
Shopify says AI shopping traffic tripled
Shopify said on August 5 that AI-driven traffic and orders to its stores tripled from a year earlier during the second quarter. The figures came alongside its official quarterly results, which cover the three months ending June 30.
The useful detail sits below the headline. Shopify said 75% of purchases credited to AI came from outside its 100 largest product categories. Half of visits from AI assistants landed directly on a product page, and those visits produced purchases nearly 80% more often than ordinary search visits. Shopify also said AI remains a small share of its total sales volume.
That pattern favors a shop selling something specific, such as sunscreen for a particular skin need or equipment sized for an unusual space. An assistant can match a detailed customer question with equally detailed product information. A broad product description gives it less to work with.
Your move
Open your five most valuable product pages and add the facts a buyer would use to narrow a choice: dimensions, materials, compatibility, use limits, care instructions, and who the item suits. Then separate AI referrals from ordinary search in your simple attribution setup. Our AI discovery explainer shows which feeds and third-party sources assistants also read.
Klaviyo buys an AI customer-service team
Klaviyo agreed on August 5 to acquire the team, software, and intellectual property of Agency, a company that builds AI for customer support. Under the announced deal, Agency co-founder Elias Torres will become Klaviyo's chief product officer after closing and will lead products including Composer and Customer Agent. Closing is expected in the third quarter. The price was not disclosed.
Klaviyo is best known for email and text-message marketing tied to online-store customer records. Composer creates marketing campaigns from instructions, while Customer Agent answers post-purchase questions and can help with tasks such as returns or order tracking. Bringing both under a new product leader signals that Klaviyo wants marketing and service to run from the same customer history.
For an operator, the immediate answer is wait. An acquisition announcement does not improve a customer conversation by itself. If you use Klaviyo, list the service jobs you would trust software to complete and the ones that still require a person. Our small-business chatbot comparison explains why refunds, complaints, and exceptions deserve a human handoff.
Cloudflare opens its workplace AI system
Cloudflare released Cloudflare OS as open-source software on August 5. Open source means organizations can inspect and modify the code. The company describes it as a browser workspace where an AI agent can read approved company information, create documents or small internal apps, and run repeatable jobs.
The more important feature is permission control. Each agent starts with no access. A business can approve a specific data source, keep the login secret away from the AI, record what information the agent viewed, and block an output from being shared with someone who lacks permission to see the source.
This is early infrastructure, not a ready-made office app for a typical small company. Deployment still needs technical work. But the design points toward the right buying question for any workplace AI: can you limit exactly what it sees and does, then review a record afterward? If a vendor cannot answer that plainly, do not connect payroll, customer records, or private contracts.
Worth watching
- Reddit is testing AI-based community-rule enforcement in more than 700 communities. Brands should expect community posts to face more checks based on meaning, not just banned words.
- Google has changed the leadership structure around its AI work. That matters strategically, but it does not require an operator move today.
- Shopify still says ordinary search supplies roughly a third of store visits. Keep AI search and regular search in the same measurement view rather than treating one as the replacement for the other.
