In this briefing

Company reporting is moving from specialist software into the chat boxes your team already uses. OpenAI and Slack both shipped ways to turn business data into answers and dashboards on September 10. That can shorten the wait for a report, but it also raises a blunt question for owners: who is allowed to ask what?

ChatGPT turns company data into a conversation

OpenAI launched a Data agent for ChatGPT Work on September 10. An agent is AI software that can complete several connected steps after a request. This one can search approved company data, investigate changes, and build a dashboard that people can edit and share, according to OpenAI's announcement.

The connections include business databases such as BigQuery and Snowflake, plus files in Google Drive and SharePoint. It can also work with reporting products including Power BI and Tableau. In plain terms, a manager can ask why sales slowed instead of waiting for someone to assemble charts. The useful part is follow-up: the same conversation can inspect the evidence behind an answer.

Access needs more attention than the demo. OpenAI says existing restrictions on tables, rows, and columns still apply, and administrators choose the available connections and users. Owners considering the feature should start with one settled metric, such as completed orders, and compare every answer with the source report. Our marketing software audit checklist explains why ownership and data access belong in the test.

Your move

Choose one weekly report with an agreed definition. Give the Data agent read-only access, ask it to rebuild the report, and have the person who owns the number check every total before anyone acts on it.

Slack builds reports inside a chat

Slackbot can now create interactive reports and dashboards called Surfaces from workspace messages and connected data. Slack's official help page says people can share a Surface in a channel or direct message, add comments, and pin it as a conversation tab.

This matters when a decision is stuck between a spreadsheet and a long chat thread. A sales lead could ask for a pipeline view by deal stage, then let the team sort opportunities where the discussion already happens. Smaller teams should still check whether the time saved justifies another premium feature; Slack says access is tied to certain Business+ and Enterprise plans.

There is a catch. Surfaces are static files today, meaning the figures do not update when the source changes. A report made Monday can look current on Friday while showing old numbers. Put the creation date in the title and rebuild it before each review. Treat it as a quicker snapshot, not a live control panel.

Gemini moves onto Windows desktops

Google released the Gemini desktop app worldwide for Windows 10 and 11 on September 10. Google says the Alt + Space shortcut opens the assistant over a person's current work, while the full app can pull information from connected Gmail and Google Drive accounts or create images and videos.

The business consequence is modest but immediate for Windows-heavy teams: staff can reach Gemini without bouncing through browser tabs. That also makes casual use easier, including pasting material that should stay private. Before rolling it out, decide which documents can enter an AI tool and which cannot. Our small-business AI content policy offers a workable starting line.

Owners already paying for an AI assistant do not need a second one because it has a desktop shortcut. Run the same five ordinary tasks in both products, then keep the one that produces fewer corrections. Convenience is useful only when it removes work.

Universal Music gives licensed AI remixing a major test

Universal Music Group and ElevenLabs signed a multi-year agreement on September 10 to build a separate AI music platform. The Universal Music announcement says fans will be able to make remixes, mashups, and personalized vocal experiences using music from artists who choose to participate.

For brands, the notable word is licensed. AI music has carried an awkward rights question: whether the material used to train or create a track was authorized. This deal puts artist participation and payment into the product design, although the platform is still being developed and commercial-use terms were not announced.

Do nothing yet. If your business commissions AI music, keep written records showing the tool, plan, creation date, and rights attached to the finished track. Our ElevenLabs pricing breakdown covers the company's current products, but this new UMG platform will be separate.

Worth watching

  • OpenAI's Data agent becomes more useful when smaller companies can connect ordinary sales and finance systems without a technical setup project.
  • Slack's Surfaces need automatic refresh before owners should rely on them for daily operating numbers.
  • Universal Music and ElevenLabs still owe businesses a launch date and clear terms for using the resulting music in ads.
