In this briefing
Google may now advertise a discount straight from your website, even when you did not add that offer to the ad yourself. That is today’s biggest budget check for retailers and local businesses. Apple also clarified how companies can stay visible in its search results while limiting use of their pages for AI training and answers.
Google can turn website deals into ad offers
Google documented automated promotions on September 7, giving advertisers one more place where an outdated website can create a costly customer dispute. The new setting lets Google Ads find an active deal on a landing page and attach it to eligible Search and Performance Max campaigns. Performance Max is Google’s campaign type that decides where ads appear across its properties.
The official Google Ads instructions say the system applies only when a campaign has a location asset, such as a store address, and no manually entered promotion. Each extracted offer can run for less than 24 hours, then return if Google still sees it on the page. Advertisers who enable account-level automated assets can switch automated promotions off in the advanced settings.
This makes a forgotten sale banner an advertising problem. A stale “20% off” message can move from a quiet page into a search ad seen by customers who expect the price at checkout or in store. Businesses already using Performance Max should treat website offer dates with the same care as prices inside the ad account.
Your move
Google’s automation can save setup time when deals change often. Owners with tightly controlled seasonal offers should favor manual promotions. Either way, add this setting to the regular checks in our Google Ads controls guide.
Apple separates search visibility from AI controls
Apple’s September 4 documentation gives publishers a cleaner choice about where their pages appear. Its Applebot guidance now says blocking Applebot-Extended, the instruction that stops Apple from using a site to train its general AI models, does not affect ranking in Apple Search.
There are separate switches. Applebot is the automated visitor that reads sites for Spotlight, Siri, and Safari search. Applebot-Extended controls whether that collected material can train Apple’s general AI models. A nosnippet tag, a short instruction placed in a page’s code, can also stop that page from supplying current information to AI-generated answers while leaving the page discoverable in ordinary Apple search.
For most small businesses, visibility is the useful default. Blocking the training use does not require disappearing from Apple search, so owners can make that policy choice separately. But blocking snippets can also remove the chance to be cited when Siri answers a customer’s question. Anyone working on AI recommendation visibility should check which instruction the site actually uses before changing it.
The practical call is simple. Keep ordinary Applebot access open unless there is a clear reason to leave Apple search. Decide training and AI-answer access based on the value and sensitivity of each page, then ask whoever manages the site to record those choices.
Google warns against mass-produced search pages
Google’s John Mueller said on September 7 that large sets of pages built from combinations of names and attributes often end up as spam, borderline spam, or low quality. In the full public exchange, he added that Google’s systems may lose confidence in a site because of older weak pages, and rebuilding that confidence takes significant work and time.
Programmatic SEO means generating many search pages from a template and a database. AI makes that cheap, which is precisely the trap. A business can publish hundreds of near-identical city or service pages before anyone asks whether each page helps a customer make a decision.
Owners do not need to stop useful local pages. They should stop creating pages whose only difference is a town name or a few generated facts. Review any large batch by asking whether each page contains distinct proof, accurate availability, and information a buyer cannot get from the main service page. Our earlier look at traffic lost to AI Overviews reached the same operating point: thin informational pages face the most pressure.
Worth watching
- Mistral raised €3 billion at a valuation above €21 billion on September 8. The money expands its computing capacity and keeps another open-weight AI supplier in the market, but it changes no small-business buying decision today.
- Shopping-ad data shared from 175 billion ad views suggests fewer appearances but a higher click rate as Google’s AI answers spread. It is one company’s dataset, so watch your own impressions and clicks before changing spend.
- Google Merchant Center briefly exposed the hidden instructions behind an AI-written performance summary. Treat its summaries as a starting point and confirm the product-level numbers underneath.
