In this briefing

ChatGPT can now place your products inside a buyer’s shortlist before that person visits a store. For an online retailer, this shifts part of product discovery away from search results and category pages. The immediate job is simple: give the assistant accurate product facts, clear images, current stock, and a reason to trust your business.

What ChatGPT shopping product discovery does

ChatGPT shopping product discovery turns a buyer’s request into a visual set of products. A person can describe the item, budget, preferred features, or intended use, then ask follow-up questions. ChatGPT may show images, prices, reviews, and features in a side-by-side comparison.

OpenAI expanded this experience in March 2026 for ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users. Its official product discovery announcement says shoppers can also upload an inspiration image and refine the results through conversation. The current merchant page says shopping is live for users in the United States.

That changes the path to a sale. A customer may arrive on your product page after an assistant has already narrowed the choice and explained the tradeoffs. Your page still has to close the sale, but it may no longer control the first comparison.

OpenAI’s shopping research also takes several minutes to build a tailored buyer’s guide for harder decisions. According to its shopping research help page, the system can use merchant feeds, public product information, and other retail sources. It then links to merchants carrying the selected items.

The practical consequence is bigger than another sales channel. Product data is becoming marketing copy that machines read first.

Where the product information comes from

A product feed is a regularly updated file containing the facts in your catalog. Think of it as a stock list built for software. It can include a product name, description, image, price, availability, size, color, seller information, and policy links.

OpenAI calls its feed system the Agentic Commerce Protocol, or ACP. The plain-English meaning is a shared format that lets stores send product information to ChatGPT. OpenAI says Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated. Sellers on those platforms need no separate feed application at present.

Other merchants can apply for access, although onboarding remains limited to approved partners. OpenAI’s merchant discovery page says a self-service system is planned later in 2026. It also lists Salesforce and Stripe among the supported paths for larger integrations.

Public pages still matter. ChatGPT shopping research reads retail sites and cites them, subject to access and quality. A feed can supply clean facts, while the site supplies context such as fit guidance, use cases, returns, and detailed comparisons.

The two sources should agree. A feed showing an item in stock while the page says sold out creates a poor handoff and weakens trust. The same problem appears when sale prices, product names, colors, or shipping claims conflict.

What makes a product easier to understand

The assistant needs facts it can compare. Clever names alone give it little to work with. “The Weekender” may suit a bag collection, but the product title and description should also say what the item is, its capacity, material, dimensions, and intended use.

Start with the details a buyer would use to reject an option. If a desk only fits a 48-inch wall, state its assembled width. If a skin product contains fragrance, make that easy to find. If a coat runs small, publish a useful size chart instead of burying the warning in reviews.

Images need the same discipline. Use a sharp primary image that shows the full item. Add views that explain scale, texture, included parts, and meaningful variants. Keep the visible image consistent with the selected color or size.

Reviews help with a different question: can the buyer believe the listing? Keep genuine reviews attached to the correct product and show how many ratings produced the average. Remove copied testimonials and never mark staff-written praise as customer feedback.

For stores that also depend on Google, much of this work carries across. Google’s product data documentation recommends product information on the page, a Merchant Center feed, or both. “Structured data” means hidden labels in a web page that identify facts such as price and stock for search systems.

Our guide to showing up in AI recommendations explains the wider evidence assistants use. The shift also connects to AI Overviews reducing website visits, because both systems answer more of the customer’s question before the click.

A six-point catalog audit

You do not need to rebuild the store this week. Audit the 20 products that matter most by revenue, margin, or strategic importance.

CheckWhat good looks likeCommon failure
Product identityPlain name, brand, model, and stable product codeA creative title with no useful category words
PriceCurrent amount and currency match everywhereA stale sale price in the feed
AvailabilityEach variant has a truthful stock stateOne blanket status for every size or color
DescriptionMaterials, dimensions, fit, use, and limits are explicitVague claims that cannot support a comparison
ImagesClear main view plus useful detail and scaleRepeated lifestyle shots that hide the item
TrustReviews and return, shipping, and warranty terms are findablePolicies hidden in a footer or missing entirely

Ask the person who manages your store to compare each product page with the catalog data sent to outside platforms. Check the product code, title, image, price, stock, and destination link. Then inspect variants separately. A shirt with one sold-out size should not disappear if five other sizes remain available.

Next, test ordinary buying questions in ChatGPT. Use wording a customer would choose, such as “carry-on backpack under $150 for a two-day work trip.” Do not search for your brand name. Record which products appear, what facts the answer uses, and whether any details are wrong.

This is an observation exercise, not a ranking guarantee. Results can vary with the user’s request, location, memory settings, and available data. A single missing result does not prove that the catalog is blocked.

Your move

Audit your 20 most valuable products against the six checks above, then run five unbranded buying questions. Fix incorrect price, stock, variant, and policy data before rewriting any promotional copy.

What the checkout change means

OpenAI has moved its main shopping experience toward merchant-owned checkout. Shoppers discover and compare inside ChatGPT, then complete the purchase on the retailer’s site or app. OpenAI says it charges no fee for those off-platform purchases.

That is useful for owners because the store keeps control of payment, fulfillment, and the final customer experience. It also creates a measurement gap. Someone may spend most of the decision process in ChatGPT and arrive only for checkout.

Watch referral traffic from ChatGPT, but do not expect referral reports to describe the full conversation that preceded the visit. Add a short post-purchase question asking how the customer found the product. Keep the choices broad enough to include an AI assistant.

Judge this channel by completed orders, order quality, returns, and support burden. Raw visits tell only part of the story. Our recent brief on Google bringing checkout into AI answers shows why retailers should prepare for several assistant-led paths rather than one dominant storefront.

Who should act now

Shopify and Etsy sellers should focus on catalog accuracy because their product data is already connected. Independent stores with a feed should review OpenAI’s requirements and application status, then keep improving the public pages while access is limited.

Brands with a small catalog have an advantage here. They can make every important listing precise without a large data team. Marketplaces and large retailers have broader selection, but a specialist can explain compatibility, fit, ingredients, or use much better.

Local service businesses can take a lighter approach. Product shopping is not the main route for a plumber, accountant, or clinic. Keep service names, coverage areas, prices where appropriate, hours, and booking policies clear. Spend most of the effort on local discovery and reputation rather than building a retail feed.

Frequently asked questions

How does ChatGPT decide which products to show?

ChatGPT may use merchant feeds, public product pages, and other retail sources. It then matches products to the needs, budget, and constraints stated in the conversation. OpenAI does not promise placement for any merchant.

Do I have to pay for my products to appear?

OpenAI describes shopping research results as organic and separate from ads. It also says purchases completed on a merchant’s own site or app carry no OpenAI transaction fee. Advertising is a separate system.

Do Shopify and Etsy sellers need another feed?

OpenAI says those catalogs are already integrated, so individual merchants do not need another application today. Sellers should still keep titles, prices, images, availability, and variant details current inside their existing store system.

Can a service business use this feature?

Current shopping results center on retail products. A service company gets more value from clear service pages, accurate business details, trustworthy reviews, and strong local information. Follow the broader AI search topic as assistants add new business categories and booking actions.

Frequently asked questions

How does ChatGPT decide which products to show?

ChatGPT can use merchant product feeds, public product pages, and other retail sources, then match options to the shopper’s stated needs and budget.

Do I have to pay for my products to appear in ChatGPT shopping?

OpenAI says organic shopping results are separate from ads, and it charges no fee when a shopper completes a purchase on a merchant’s own site or app.

Do Shopify and Etsy sellers need to submit a product feed?

OpenAI says Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated, so individual sellers on those platforms do not need to apply for feed access today.

Can a local service business appear in ChatGPT shopping?

The current shopping system is built mainly around products, but service businesses can still improve discovery with clear service pages, prices, locations, and independent reviews.
